Oisin was the first PhD candidate I supervised. His mission was to looks for stars that serendipitously had neighbours in the sky with similar brightness and colour. This makes it easier to subtract the effects of the atmosphere on the photometry of these stars and so be able to detect smaller changes in their intrinsic output. So events like exoplanet transits can be more faithfully observed.

This was a data intensive project. Downloaded the myriad of files from SDSS, selecting the parameters of interest, and churning through all the star targets. He used Grid computing for this, but made many adaptations to optimise it for file input and output and the extremely parallel nature of the job.
